When I was a girl in middle school, I spent a lot of time making out with this other girl, H, and watching videos of British YouTubers who we wrote gay fanfiction about; but now, a decade and a half later, I am a man, she has passed, and the YouTubers have publicly come out. In my autoperformance, I recreate confessional YouTube videos and the fandom around them, combining them with "confessional" storytelling to explore the relationship of memory to grief to identity-creation to truth to parasociality to existential horror to gay transmasculinity.

Monologues Against Confession is the result of a collaborative, hands-on workshop that invites writers to investigate the interactions between dramatic structures, expectations of vulnerability, and queerness. In queer and trans theater—like in queer literature—there is often an expectation to be confessional, to present a “brave” truth for a voyeuristic cis/het audience. As a form within drama highlighting vulnerability, the monologue can be an exciting place to reel audiences in to challenge these expectations. Participants’ writing was revised and compiled in this anthology.

A landline phone rewired to play an original monologue detailing a fugitive’s confession of love to a partner left behind. As the listener presses the button to listen to the monologue, they are transported to the lover’s world, covered in the traces and lost messages of the fugitive.
